Direct Action Theatre: Tender Riot

About program

The “Serve and Protect” is an ongoing series of artistic public interventions by “Direct Action Theatre” in which they work with riot police uniforms as the main visual and symbolic material. They place the uniforms into absurd or uncommon situations and so playfully question the status quo of the police as an entity. They want to really “serve and protect” the people, nature, pleasure, beauty, and life itself.

Direct Action Theater

“If there is a hard, high wall and an egg that breaks against it, no matter how right the wall or how wrong the egg, I will stand on the side of the egg.” — Haruki Murakami

Direct Action Theater unapologetically stands with all metaphorical eggs. The group explores the connection between theatre, performance, and protest. They tackle urgent and pressing issues, using public space interventions to spark dialogue around contemporary social, political, and environmental struggles, movements, and causes.
